You just made a good point appear, Dadan could not be a female name.

the facts we do know is this however:

-Dadan was a friend of the family
-Garp said that he left Luffy and Ace with Dadan
-Woodslap trusts Dadan, meaning that this individual is not a pirate

I just say that Dadan will be someone important later on, since Oda loves to foreshadow in One Piece.
