kakashi losing his eye actually presents as large of a problem as his death, he was the natural choice to succeed tusnade. The hokage is the strength of the village, and kakashi without his eye is a symbol of incompleteness or weakness. remove his abilities to continue as the copy ninja and who is left to take over? certainly not Guy, and Asuma is dead, so who does that leave?

You all are assuming that it is irreparable harm, and not fixable by Tsudane or another medical nin... And that he is hit in his sharigan eye... Hard to tell from the manga (silhouette)
