This was probably the only series Ive watched over and over again.
Still didn't get it even after the 50th time Ive watched the whole series :/
Then I watched the movie,and the whole time I was tripping balls.

Anyone care to explain why I didn't get it :/

I read this on Wikipedia:

Hideaki Anno, the director of the anime series, had suffered from clinical depression prior to creating the series, and the psychological aspects of the show are based on the director's own experiences with overcoming this illness.

I am guessing that is why the show is so trippy.
I have watched the show, and even read some of the manga and still can not get it... I wonder if I would understand it had I read the whole manga. The only think that cleared things up for me a little bit is the Wikipedia article about NGE.
I am surprised about the low popularity of NGE on these forums. For me it is a masterpiece!
