how about you color the shades in a seperate layer and in the original page's layer you then brush away the grays of the shades?

Or he could clean up the image first, erase the shades, create new lines (lineart) and then start colouring. Then use the original image as a reference so he doesn't forget what areas that were shaded.

I think I'll go with gin's suggestion because the manga I want to do colors with is a very very dark themed manga. I want to preserve the foreboding/evil feeling of the page.

Linearts are the way to go, erasing gray is probably the gayest thing to do.
I'll try doing a tutorial on my next coloring if it's not a long one.

Add more shadows and highlights. Furthermore, try getting 'm more straight. (This is pretty hard by hand and more easily done by using the pen tool, I'll see if I can spiff up a "Coloring v2" sometime soon.)
