i voted the first option.
sasuke at the begining was a weakling.
he could have beeb killed many times by stronger oponments.
haku, orochimaru, deidara, etc could have killed him before he develops the sharingan.
even the sound ninjas could have killed him when they first met.
so itachi would have had no brother to rip his eyes.
it would be better if he protected sasuke and help him develop his sharingan and then killed him to obtain his eyes.
it is not that i do not like the plot but i think it would be easier for itachi to kill sasuke before someone else did if he was with him pretending the good brother.

Good point, I thought about that too. He could've done it the "Madara-way" but didn't. Why?

I think it was a great turn of events! Would've been too lame with the "I wanted to protect you Sasuke" part or whatever it was ;P

I loved it. Just a couple weeks ago, we were told the Uchihas were basically gods among shinobi, which left me confused as to what reason Itachi would need Sasuke, cuz he left him alive for a purpose, and then to see the anxiety and pain in Itachi's face... Classic. Can you fathom being on the edge of having the Ultimate Sight, only to have your's deteriate ever so slowly...even if it's madness, Itachi needed to express some, no, any emotion.

in my opinion the reason itachi choose that path is either he believed in sasukes potential or he could not do otherwise because if he let his clan live then his plans would be exposed.
perhaps his father would not let him focus on his plans.

I'm actually disappointed. From the beginning the Uchiha have been way too powerful, and now they have basically the ultimate eyes. I doubt the Rinnegan (sp?) even compares. Sasuke is essentially a power-beast, between the Sharingan and the curse seal.
