It's the way the world works. Malcolm isn't dense, he knows what to think and what to conclude. But he also is sorta the kind of person who is dangerous in all ways. I'm not sure whether the egg-destruction is already enough to convince Malcolm. I think he's a very doubtful person, and that's actually a good character trait for life, but not good for our protagonists.
