FPS:Halo for an insane online/multiplayer experience, and Resistance or Killzone if your a Sony fan. Modern Warfare effectively can be callled an FPS must and Goldeneye deserves a lot of credit for starting it all.
And that's about it. Could've expanded this list a little more but then I'd be rambling:p

In what parallel universe did goldeneye start fps? I think you really need to be looking towards: Doom, Castle Wolfenstein & Duke Nuken ... "Hail to the king baby!" and of course Quake for the real start to FPS..

Anyways my favourite games of all time (from a pure fun perspective)

MMORPG - Lineage 2 "you go you go PK PK!!"
FPS - Return to Castle Wolfenstein PC (Multiplayer - the old one)
RPG - Tales of Vesperia ... until FFXIII

Goldeneye revolutionized the way multiplayer for FPS's on consoles was handled and is highly praised for that by many gamers. Without it Halo would have stayed a racing game like Bungie planned it to be. Get your facts straight before putting the guy down.

Popularized it. Nothing new to speak of in the Halo series.

Golden Eye did revolutionize FPS's on the console. Proximity mines, complex maps, unlocks, customizable gameplay. I'm sure that Golden Eye released first too.

Exactly. Halo made it popular but everything it had in regards to gunplay had been done before in Goldeneye. Everything from free aim to dual wielding, Goldeneye was the pioneer.

But really goldeneye may have changed things for consoles, split screening was neat... but it brought nothing new to gaming in general... it has all been done before (is what i am saying).

I was and still am talking about consoles though. Golden Eye released before Duke Nukem 3D for N64. Golden Eye defined multiplayer on the console, after it's release it became the benchmark for all FPS's to come.

Ahh, Duke Nukem 3D was a brilliant game to play as kid.
Watching strippers, slaughtering fat pigs, and over-killing everything with the RPG =D

If we're talking old FPS games that would probably be my number 1, 2nd and 3rd place going to Doom 2 and Quake 2.
