If nagato was tobi, why would he have to show up to where yahiko-pein is? seems like the rin'negan would probably allow him to talk to himself without physically being there.

Nah, seriously. If someone have the Rin'negan and gives the power to another, that makes him stupid if he's a bad guy. A bad guy ho owns a power wouldn't share it to anothers. On the other hand, I think Madara's eye would deteriorate the same way normal body parts do when dead...
