Ah, so Lucy's mother was used to open the gate for dragons.
What do you mean how ? It's the most obvious conclusion, at least for now.
A stellar spirit mage can be used to open the gate and we know that Lucy's mother (who is the same kind of mage) disappeared together with dragons.
The truth is, this should be realized a long time ago since they can indeed open doors to other worlds, to bring out help in the form of summoning spirits. This chapter reinforces the idea since it is confirmed that beside normal summoning, it's possible to solely open a gate for a longer periods of time. We know that the current villains, had to gather enormous magic power from all those tournaments and are going to sacrifice a stellar spirit mage.
The thing is, I think that most people believed that Dragons used their own power to open rifts in space, but it is suggested that Lucy's mother and the Dragons disappearance are related and thus now we know how they could be related. If dragons themselves can't open gates, then that means they couldn't return as well and so someone who could open the gate might have needed to go with them, to open a new gate at the time of their return.
Your theory is way overboard, Layla wasn't kidnapped and forced to open another dimension if that were the case then Capricorn would've told Lucy. As far as we know she had an illness and died on the year x777.
I know it seems like theirs a connection but there's no facts to back up that theory.
And just to add, Celestial Spirit Mages don't open doors the spirit themselves open doors which explains why they can pop up at any given time, the mages can only call the spirits and in some cases we've seen the spirits refuse to show.

I didn't say that she was kidnapped, she would rather willingly help them. If she indeed died from that illness, then that could have been part of the sacrifice (a shortened lifespan), since they intend to use up Lucy's whole life to open a semi-permanent gate ?
The mage itself is a receiver (or perhaps the key and the mage is just a power source, but not anyone can use this type of magic), without first forming a contract with it, spirits can't open the gate. On the other hand the mage is able to first summon the spirit regardless of it's will, to set up terms for summoning.
Currently there are two things that allows summoning, a key or a gate. The waterfall at which the Stellar King appeared is most likely a gate.
Not to mention, the number 7 (the time it took them to prepare for opening the gate) reapers yet again.
Anyway, some interesting thing I noticed about the gate itself:
Spoiler!
You can see one sun (Lucy ?), 12 smaller moons(just like the main 12 spirits) and one big moon (the king). It's possible that this gate is meant to link to the world where beings opposite to Stellar Spirits live.
Hey, it's a credible theory.
Anyway, the important thing here... GUYS, FOCUS!
As I was saying, the important thing here is that we must see that magazine!
