True, but then you can sign a contract if your controlling them, not summon them, technical difference.

For all we know those animals exist only for the Rinnegan, anx is not obtainable for others than those with it. Ofc it's possible Nagato found them and stuck the Chakra rods in them, but the thing about the Path's of Pain/Rinnegan abilities is that they are all unique, don't see a reason to have a own path for a normal jutsu, it's not like ha have his own paths for all the different elements(if you get my point). I also think there's a reason why their so powerful, since they are special summons.

Then again no one knew anything about the Rinnegan at the point, almost no one thought it existed.

Sadly, Jiraiya really didn't know shit... he hadn't seen any of those Rinnegan abilities before, hence being surprised by literally everything Pain threw at him.

I agree that the Rinnegan probably has unique summons, hence "Animal Realm"... I don't see the need for a summoning Path if it doesn't include summons.

He summons those animals. He controlled them via the Rinnegan, which is why they all had the rinnegan in their eyes. I believe the rinnegan works in place of the contract. He is the only person I've seen that summons multiple types and forms of creatures.

I agree with that, though. I think that must be what makes Animal Realm unique, the lack of a contract requirement.

i suspect, considering there's a bird summon with extra wings, a multiple-headed dog summon with can split after every attack, a creature summon who is part iguana part snake part some other crap lol; i come to the conclusion that these creatures are unnatural and created by the sage himself, therefore belonging to whoever possesses the rinnegan.

here's some more food to chew on: was the demon realm arguably the first puppet ever build? by the sage himself? maybe inspired future shinobi to build puppets like those form the sand village.

Hmmmmm, I'm not sure, even though chakra based techniques didn't exist (well maybe those of samurai), soul and body techniques might have existed, for example, controlling a puppet by using your own soul or someone else.
