^ Oh man, you should know that his last opponent is going to be Natsu , just like in "Lucifer and the Biscuit Hammer" ("Hoshi no Samidare").
The other reason why Gray beat Ultear, is because Natsu had problems with her. Each time Natsu has problems with/loose to someone, Gray proves to be capable of beating them. Just like with the Birdguy that ate Natsu, were Gray defeated the stronger version (strenghtened by Natsu's magic) of a opponent to with Natsu lost.
It doesn't mean that Gray is stronger, but that not only their magic elements are polar opposites, but fighting styles as well. That's why they are capable of defeating different kinds of enemies, when loosing to ones that the other one could defeat.
As much as those two knuckleheads butt heads, I can't imagine them ever getting too serious. I sure would love to see them go all out against each other though, problem is Lucy and Erza would end them if they tried.
I do like that you brought up Fukurou, was a great way to establish how sometimes the two of them just get mismatched against opponents. The same thing happened in Edolas except the two were so stubborn they beat their opponents anyway. Natsu destroys while Gray creates, gotta love the symbolism.
Also, I'm surprised Mashima hasn't brought up the fact that while Natsu can't stand moving vehicles, Gray's one mean, lean, biking machine! This is what Omake's are for! (Should be one coming up soon after the arc finishes hopefully)
Zero you have 999 posts! This is my 800th, I'll catch up soon. If only you wouldn't spread your intellect and explain stuff for people so often you fiend!
As long as everything just keeps on flowing forward, then that's already enough.
Where there's a will there's a way!
talking about Gray and Natsu, just love this scene when grey learns that he passed Gildartz test ;D
