If the Japanese really cared about "stupid politicians" doing "stupid things" like these, they won't put them in office, or find a way to put someone in who is sympathetic to them. I'm sure that they've got anti-censorship activists over there, too. Last I heard, they're still a democratic country.

It's their culture, after all, and they have a right to do whatever with it as they please. If their people don't care about their culture being censored and choose to give up their creative rights, we have no right to interfere.

And like I said, the law is restricted to Tokyo, so if publishers really feel strongly about their art they can bring their business elsewhere. Also, publishers aren't so poor that they can't lobby against laws like these.

Shit load of publishers already boycotted the Tokyo anime fair in protest of Ishihara. Didn't help at all. Neither did petitioning.
With a bit of luck, some crazed otaku will eventually throw a petrol bomb through Ishihara's window :1

Now how in the hell does this target the actual hentai market wich i (assume?) they are aiming at. the only thing this law does is damage actual legitimate mangakas using those themes to use in they'r stories without actually doing just about any damage to the massive online hentai stuff.

They do care but the politicians don't give a damn about any one else's opinion except their own.

The bill was revised to include fictional characters, calling them "fictional minors" who still are protected under human rights laws.

well the thing is the way i read it (witch is what it hinges on the way the law makers read it) is that the stuff in fairy tail in not really sexually explicit, its a bit on the mature side but not pornographic in the way i think they mean.
but yeah they are really stupid. by this logic they will be charging oda for animal cruelty, and Kishimoto will be charged for crimes against humanity for the genocide of fodder ninja. LOL
seriously if this was put forth in amarica this would not even make it to a vote.

I wonder what would happen if all mangakas just stopped writing their mangas if they actually get really serious about this...

So does that mean movies with characters in their underwear or swimsuit are rated R over there? or will be, at least.. Cause im thinking thats way more "real" than manga.. :-/

i do not know how that works chances are there all smoking some bad Mary Jane. and if the mangakas go on strike that would just shut down this thing for sure because of how much money they pump in to the economy and if they stop they make no money and if they make not money the companies do not make the millions and millions that they make, and the GOV. can not collect taxes on those millions and millions.

(plus as much money as there is in the manga industry i am sure they can toss some around to sway some votes.)

well,seing the japanese geoghraphy , size, or the population of Tokyo, and how much it pretains to consumer percentage.
ANYTHING getting banned in Tokyo is pretty much end of that industry. Period.

No, instead, what this will cause is the publishers to self-regulate themselves from letting their artists draw what they want.

Publishers aren't gonna ignore the bill and have their books pulled from the entire Tokyo. You don't seem to realize this, but that is suicide.
If any major company did that, it would bankrupt in less than a year.

It sounds more and more a lot like the implimenting of the comics code into American comics in the 50's.

well,the problem is cross , since decision is completely left at the mercy of the censors, with no clear lines drawn, regardless of the spirit the bill will cause artists to be overly sensitive to not cross the line, thus resulting in strict restriction of their freedom of expression.

For example if Berserk was to start serializing after this bill had passed, we may never have seen those episodes, as the artist may be afraid to cross the invisible line. THAT is the main concern.
