Yin-Yang chakra manipulation

The words yin&yang has been used in TWO DIFFERENT CONTEXTS in the series.

• When yin&yang are used to describe the type of technique, kishi is referring to whether its a dark(yin) or a light(yang) chakra manipulation. Where dark(yin) chakra manipulations have more spiritual energy than physical energy and light(yang) chakra manipulation have more physical energy than spiritual energy.

• The second case is when these terms are used with spiritual energy(yang) and physical energy(yin), the components that form chakra.

From the manga the definition of yin&yang are revealed by Madara regarding So6P's Izanagi jutsu which uses both yin and yang chakra manipulation.

• By administering imagination and spiritual energy which forms the basis of "YIN" power. He would create shape and form (Yin = The physical) from nothingness.

• By administering vitality and the physical energy which forms basis of "YANG" power. He would breathe life (Yang = The Spiritual) into that form.

The concept(Chinese in orgin) of how yin-yang works is based on a simple rule that one can't exist without the other, you may have heard of the famous phrase "For every Yin there's a Yang". Therefore dark(yin) and light(yang) chakra manipulations both count as ONE chakra manipulation as dark(yin) and light(yang) chakra manipulations BOTH need physical energy AND spiritual energy.

Here are some examples of yin&yang use in the series;

• One of the things So6P used Izanagi for is to create the tailed beasts, they have physical form as seen from the eight tails when his horn got chopped and the nine tails could be restrained(first hokage with wood, kushina with special chakra chains). They also have a conscience, the eight tails has a benevolent demeanor while the nine tails has a sadistic and violent demeanor all of which were created from the Juubi's chakra.

• The fight between shikamaru vs Tayuya(sound 4 ninja), there was a dark(yin) technique used. It was explained because the technique's chakra has more spiritual energy the chakra tries to feed on a body(physical energy) it comes into contact with to balance itself.

• And finally Jiraiya said Minato sealed the spiritual energy(yang) part of the fox's chakra within Naruto and the physical energy(yin) within the death god.

NOTE:The Uchiha and the Senju have inherited the dark(yin) and light(yang) bloodline limits of the So6P but that doesn't meant those two clans are the only ones that can have an affinity torwards dark(yin)&light(yang) chakra manipulation or even use dark(yin)&light(yang) chakra manipulation. Having an affinity allows you to use strong jutsu in that chakra manipulation's field. All shinobi can use jutsu from all chakra manipulations but are weaker if they don't have an affinity towards that manipulation. Kakashi's analysis during the Kakuzu fight explains this well, based from all the shinobi we have seen so far you can have up to 3 manipulations. Nagato/So6P are the exception, as the rinnegan gives affinities to ALL 6 chakra manipulations.

Now that we have a sound idea of how yin-yang works, lets apply this to jutsu we have yet to identify their chakra elements. The next three jutsu are special cases.

Shadow clones

Naruto learned this from the scroll of seals(created by the first hokage) which contains numerous forbidden jutsu. It has been used throughout the series by multiple characters but we never knew what kind of chakra manipulation is in play. Apart from the fact that the chakra used for this technique is split evenly amongst the clones created, I strongly believe this jutsu uses Yin-Yang chakra manipulation just like Izanagi.

• A shadow clone has physical form and this is the main reason why it's so useful for battle. Apart from the danger of suffering from physical exhaustion due to the chakra usage, any mental stress a clone experienced is transferred to the user when a clone is de-spelled as well.

• A shadow clone has a conscience(living), clones have the same demeanor as the user and can interact with the world. This was particularly obvious when Naruto first turned into 2 tail fox mode during the garra rescue arc, one of Naruto's clones felt lucky he was saved when Kakashi halted the transformation and didn't get de-spelled from Naruto's fox mode. This is taken advantage of when a clone has learned something and once the clone is de-spelled all it learned is transferred back to the user.

This also would explain why the third hokage could use shadow clones with death god summoning.

Mokuton(Wood release)

Yamato stated this jutsu was a combination of water and earth but with the new information that Hashirama's powers represent so6P's light(yang) bloodline limit there's obviously more to this jutsu than meets the eye.

This jutsu is actually a rare case of 3 chakra manipulations(light+water+earth) formed into one, the fact that this jutsu is an example of a life source(chakra creating trees that can grow) definitely means yang power is involved. And we know when this jutsu is used it's always created from EXISTING physical forms such as the ground, bridges, roofs and even users(Yamato created a wood clone from himself). In order words the user doesn’t create wood out of nothingness, so this means Dark(Yin) chakra manipulation is NOT involved. But we all know the wood we see extending from these EXISTING physical forms is a combination of earth and water chakra manipulations.

Amaterasu

This jutsu is also very unique and is used by the Mangekyō Sharingan, the sharingan being a representation of the SO6P's dark(yin) bloodline limit also means there's more to this jutsu that meets the eye.

This jutsu is a combination of the fire and dark(yin) chakra manipulations. We definitely know this has something do with fire because the flames are hot(in fact hot as the sun), also the uchiha clan have an affinity to fire chakra manipulation. And we also know the black flames ARE created out of nothingness as the flames appear out of thin air where ever the user's eyes are focused, so this means it’s a dark(yin) chakra manipulation. And finally the black flames themselves need an existing life form, in this case the wielder to aim the flames accordingly. So the black flames are lifeless on their own and NOT a light(yang) chakra manipulation.

Note:
This would explain why the flames last for so long and why those who have tried in overpowering this jutsu with only nature manipulations have failed. This again gives an idea how masterful Hashirama was to deal with Madara(EMS and the nine tails). This comes back to Minato's statement about Madara "No one could ever face him without very unique set of abilities", wood jutsu for one is still unique to this day and understandably why Madara praised Hashirama.

Light(Yang) chakra manipulation

lets go into some interesting jutsu that involve yang power.

Medical jutsu

Medical jutsu is used to heal, healing is an example of life without physical form. The chakra is manipulated into a source of life to stimulate dead body cells in order to heal and therefore a light(yang) chakra manipulated technique. And it heals existing physical forms(people, animals etc..) and therefore not a dark(yin) chakra manipulation.

Multi-Size jutsu

The user with the help of a ridiculous food diet(to increase one's physical energy) and light(yang) chakra manipulation stimulates body cellular growth rate which allows the user to become massive in physical stature. Again this technique needs an existing physical form(in this case the user) and therefore not a dark(yin) chakra manipulation.

Edo tensei(Impure world resurrection)

It was first used by the 2nd hokage, the summoner needs to provide a living sacrifice and the DNA(decent amount) of whom they want to revive providing his soul is in the afterlife(pureworld). These summoned souls are the living without physical form, this is exactly what forms the basis of yang power.

So this jutsu is a light(yang) chakra manipulated technique, the technique would have been a yang-yin chakra technique if the summoner could create the sacrifice out of nothingness instead of using an existing living sacrifice for the soul to inhabit. Kabuto said he can use this jutsu better than those before him so this could have something to do with Kabuto being able to create sacrifices which may have something to do with Madara's reaction to the 6th coffin. Or maybe Kabuto somehow found a way to no longer limit himself to the pure world to summon souls, maybe he wants to revive his master, Orochimaru.

Note:When we found out the second hokage used this technique, the first thing that came to mind was that it didn't seem to go with the senju theme of keeping the peace. But it makes a lot sense now, this and wood jutsu are both examples of life returning to the living world. As with all reviving techniques there's a balance within nature, meaning for someone to be revived one must die in its place which in this case the living sacrifice's soul is traded place with the soul summoned. During the ritual the summoner uses their own blood along with the DNA of the soul they want to revive. This jutsu largely resembles a curse to those summoned(can't act on their own or die) the summoner's blood could be a weakness to the summons, usually in a curse blood is key in stopping a curse.

Soul transfer jutsu

Most people think this jutsu is created by Orochimaru which is incorrect, early in part 2 before Orocihmaru died it goes into where and when he discovered this jutsu which is why the third hokage knew of it during their fight. That said he did create the dimension where he conducts the soul transfer, but more on that later.

Orocihmaru believed he attained immortality by moving his soul from one body(physical form) to another. This is another case where a soul represents life without physical form. When we saw the soul transfer attempt on Sasuke in the Orocihmaru's dimension we saw both souls trying to win the fight for body(physical form) domination. So this again is a yang manipulation, note how Orocihmaru's soul needed an EXISTING body to inhabit and therefore not a yin-yang manipulation as a body(physical form) is not created from nothingness.

Note: Orocihmaru truly believed this was immortally, but even the So6P could die despite his ability of creation. I think when Kakuzu said there's no such thing as immorality was extremely valid.

Death god summoning

This jutsu in my opinion is the most interesting out the lot. The trade mark swirl left behind on the user belongs to the uzumaki clan which isn't too surprising, since they were wiped out because their specialty with sealing jutsu. Not to mention Uzumaki Kushina did say she taught the forth hokage sealing techniques who incidentally was the first person we saw use this technique. Also the Raikage speculated Minato would have learned the death god summoning from Uzumaki Kushina (By the way the cloud village tried to kidnap Uzumaki Kushina).

The user sacrifices their soul in exchange to summon the death god who then can consume souls and chakra (in the fox's case, there is a limit to how much chakra the death god can absorb at a time). There doesn't seem to be a limit to the number of souls that can be consumed by the death god other than the how long the user can maintain the summoning based on their current chakra. The third hokage pulled out the first and second hokage's souls but had problems when he tried to pull out orocihmaru's soul and the third hokage got stabbed in the process which didn't help the situation. The reason as to why a host is unable to execute this jutsu is still unknown but I'm guessing it has something do with the user's soul changing once they become a host or maybe the death god can't make a contract with a tailed beast to begin the summoning.

More or less the workings of this jutsu is revealed, there are definitely some blacks spot but there's enough in the manga to make sense of it. The death god is another one of those examples of a life form without physical form which is backed up by the third hokage noticing the death god's dark and vile demeanor. Which led to his realization that its dangerous to be in contact with such darkness for too long. Also Orochimaru couldn't see the death god until his body(physical form) came into contact with the death god. So this too is a light(yang) manipulated technique and because the death god needs a summoner with physical form to be summoned or even to be seen this implies its not a yin-yang technique as the death god jutsu isn't physical in form which is why it must be summoned.

Note: With regards to the death god's dark and vile demeanor, this could help us understand why the so6P died despite his ability of creation. He was in contact with the juubi for a long period of time and the Juubi is described as the most foul and dark entity to ever exist in the world. This is something worth thinking about for the future about Madara's plan to revive the juubi.

Madara's ethereal form

Don't confuse this with his dimensional time space technique where he can move from one location to another, and to and from his mysterious dimension and the real world(the one where he took Sasuke to, during the kage summit arc). This technique has been quite the mystery, most of us when we first saw it didn't even know what to make of it as to what kind of technique it is. What we know about this is jutsu is that Madara needs to be in his physical form to interact with the world and he can only be in his ethereal form for up to 5 minutes at time.

This too is example of something living without physical form and therefore a yang technique. Important to note that Madara must return to his physical form, implying this too isn't a yin-yang technique as Madara returns to an existing body(physical form) as oppose to creating one.

Note:As for the reason why Madara is limited to the 5 minutes and not more is still unknown, most likely something to with Madara's current chakra reserves or potentially something similar to the 5 sec delay for shinra tensei. This also could imply that Madara couldn't do this until he stole Hashirama's powers(so6p's yang bloodline limit) which in turn could tell us what sort of techniques Hashirama had and how he single handily dealt with Madara(EMS) and the nine tails at the same time.

Dark(Yin) chakra manipulation

Now I'll go into some interesting techniques that involve yin power.

Henge(transformation) jutsu

This jutsu like the shadow clones has been used throughout the whole series and we had no idea what the hell this seemly simple jutsu really is about. The user changes their physical form into something else they have had contact with in the past, Naruto used it a lot at the start of the series and Tsunade uses it daily to hide her old age.

This is a dark(yin) chakra manipulation as physical form is created and a life form is needed which in this case is the user as we have never seen another lifeless object being transformed and therefore not a light(yang) chakra manipulation. This would also explain despite those who can see chakra with their eyes such the Sharingan, Byakugan and Rinnegan can't tell if there are transformed life forms nearly, as chakra is manipulated(Yin) to create physical form and therefore that's the only thing they see. This was obvious when Nagato couldn't tell a wind rasengan was a transformed shadow clone or when Naruto transformed shadow clones into rocks at the end of their fight. Speaking of shadow clones this further reinforces the idea that the shadow clone is a Yin-Yang chakra manipulation as a shadow clone must have life for it to be transformed. I suspect the byakugan maybe the exception though due to its extreme insights with chakra.

Shadow jutsu

As we all know this jutsu has complete control over the target's movements once the user's created shadow comes into contact with the target’s shadow. The physical form created by this jutsu is the shadow and therefore a yin chakra manipulation. This jutsu is lifeless on its own and needs a life form(in this case the user) to aim the technique accordingly.

Note: Many people have the misconception that users can't create shadows and need existing shadows to use this jutsu. But this is wrong because within light there's shadow, go back to the Skikamaru fight with Temari in the chuunin exams (Part 1) if you want proof. The use of existing shadows cuts down the chakra usage when using this jutsu over long distances. It seems the chakra usage when creating a shadow without any pre-existing ones is significant. Skikamaru's constant innovation of new tactics to catch the target off guard with existing shadows during his younger days to conserve his low chakra reserves is proof of that. Although his chakra reserves have improved drastically as seen during the Kakuzu/Hidan encounter, he created shadows all the time to stall or fool them from noticing the real plan of attack.

Genjutsu

We've seen a lot genjutsu in the series, so it's more or a less fully defined as to how it works. The user tries to regulate the chakra going to the target's brain which in turn manipulates the target's senses which indirectly creates an illusion, where the targets mistaken as reality. At a first glance I found it difficult to relate the illusions created by genjutsu to Yin(dark) chakra as they aren’t physical forms which has to be the case for it to be a yin(dark) chakra manipulation.

But thanks to the recent information about the sharingan being a representation of the SO6P's dark(yin) bloodline limit and understanding how Tsukuyomi works, helps us explain why genjutsu is a dark(yin) chakra manipulation. Tsukuyomi gets into effect almost instantly and the user is able to manipulate time and space (surroundings, i.e... what’s in the illusion created). Because time is distorted this means all that occurred during the illusion actually occurred in an alternate dimension, a dimension where one’s imagination can become physical form. This explains why in the living world during the illusion the affected people are standing completely still. How fast the technique activates, the degree of how much time distort tells you how powerful the genjutsu is and how long the illusion lasts tells you how skillful the user is. Itachi kept Kakashi in the illusion world(The anime(part 1) called it the phantom world) for 72 hours but lasted less than second in the real world, which tells why Tsukuyomi is regarded the most powerful genjutsu and why Itachi is a expert in genjutsu.

As genjutsu creates an illusion of physical form (in another dimension) this means it’s a dark(Yin) chakra manipulation and as the illusion itself is lifeless the user(life-form) needs to maintain it via using there own chakra meaning its not a light(yang) chakra manipulation.

Note:The more detailed the illusion the more chakra is needed. Also because Tsukuyomi is an advanced genjutsu, this technique has a lot more spiritual energy than usual, apart from chakra exhaustion the user also experiences physical pain in their eyes. This is to balance the technique with physical energy due to the spiritual energy being a lot more dominate.

Madara’s eye of the moon plan is to cast an Eternal Tsukuyomi to enslave everyone in genjutsu, this plan now makes a lot of sense to me. As the illusion on its own is life-less this would still require Madara to maintain it. But now that Madara has both the yin(dark) and yang(light) bloodline limits of the So6P he can breathe life into the illusion and he wouldn’t need to maintain the illusion even if he dies. The same way the tailed beasts still live on after the so6P died.

The soul transfer jutsu and genjutsu have a lot of similarities, they both occur in another dimension and both try to overpower the target's soul(some may prefer the word spirit). But genjutsu at best can only break one's spirit while the soul transfer jutsu can take take over completely and hence their body. This is one of the reasons why Orocihmaru was obsessed with the sharingan as he marveled at the genjutsu Itachi used on him. This also would explain why Sasuke with his sharingan could resist the soul transfer ritual and with the help of the curse seal ended up absorbing Orocihmaru. And would explain why Orocihmaru resorted to Sasuke to begin with as he had no chance to compete with a genjutsu expert like Itachi.

Susanoo

Susanoo has physical form we saw the all the stages development with Sasuke's Susanoo, first the bones then the muscles/skin and finally the cloak. This means Susanoo is a dark(yin) chakra manipulation and since Susanoo needs the user's physical energy to be maintained its not a light(yang) chakra manipulation, the extend of the physical energy needed is massive as the user feels pain all over their body when using it. Not to mention the added chakra needed to use Susanoo for defence and attack. Also Karin's observation of how dark sasuke's chakra felt while using Susanoo is a dead give a way.

Conclusions
You probably noticed the pattern half way through this, that all the jutsus above have one thing in common that some form of yin and yang needs to be present, one can't exist without the other. In the cases of the light(yang) chakra manipulation there needed to be an existing physical form. And for Dark(yin) chakra manipulation need an existing life-form, where as we've seen with the sharingan techniques can have severe drawbacks on their body(physical energy).

Don't forget that Dark(yin) chakra manipulation has more spiritual energy than physical energy, the chakra needs to balance itself. The more spiritual energy the chakra has, the more advanced the technique is in dark(yin) chakra manipulation and therefore the more physical energy is required to balance it. A variation of Izanagi used by the Uchiha is a prime example of this, after the technique ends the eye's tomes(the trade mark of an advanced dark chakra manipulation) disappears implying it used more spiritual energy it can manage and the eye lid shuts permanently rendering the eye useless to even use for normal sight implying the physical energy needed was equally too great.

I'm beginning to suspect the Uzumaki clan have an affinity towards Yin-Yang chakra element. Naruto's skill with the shadow clone/henge jutsu (even Tsunade only part Uzumaki is very skillful with the henge jutsu and medical jutsu), Uzumaki kushina liked using the same jutsu as Naruto (Shadow clones, henge, summonings), also the death god summoning originated from the Uzumaki clan and finally the techniques Uzumaki Nagato used with his Rinnegan. With the same deductions I made with each jutsu above you can see that Rinne tensei which revives the dead is a (light)Yang chakra manipulation and gravity manipulation is a Yin(dark) chakra manipulation. Jiraiya during the fight with Nagato, wondered why he didn't use any elemental jutsu and he continued this trend when he invaded konoha despite having chakra affinities to all manipulations. I think this was the reason as to why.

A lot of big things are gonna happen to Naruto one way or another and "that Jutsu" most likely is going to be it. It wouldn't surprise me this jutsu is an advanced yin-yang chakra manipulation and I think we all can agree on now, is that Yin-Yang manipulation is going to the thing you need to compete with Madara now.
