I just checked movie 10 yesterday and the tree where Luffy left his hat definitely looks like a daft green (the poisonous plant that the animals can't stand). Though this one is particularly big.

My take on this island:

The people were able to live here by planting daft greens so they won't be attacked by the animals there. Then a big climate change came and wiped most of these plants and only one big tree were left. That left their village unprotected and thus end of their civilization.
