    The problem is.. Yama is too strong. He HAD to kill him because nobody can fight him.

    He has to die for same reasons the hokage of the Hidden Village of Leaf had to die in the first Naruto arc. They play the same archetype. There must be a successor. The archetype demands. Hence it's bad storywriting to let him live. Given the circumstances, Yama can't even go bankai though, which is a bit disappointing.
