I'm using Paint.net and it doesn't have a burn tool... does a paintbrush with black color work? Or is it that important that you use a burn tool?

I don't have experience with Paint.net. Filling in black areas manually with a black brush works (though probably not as well as the polygonal lasso or pen tools that photoshop has), though it kind of defeats the intent of speed scanlating, since it would take you a very long time.

Burning speed scans is nice because at the cost of a little lineart (depending on how rough you are with it), you can make a black totally black and look acceptable within seconds.

the thing that is left is, that you should give some advices about typesetting

like, how to make a white field around the text...when you write on black undergound and want to keep your words in black - for example...

how to stroke your text...i mean...it's not difficult - but still, i don't think that everyone knows that...it took me a while too!
