    Covers That Wowed You

Covers. I think it's safe to say that every single musician on the planet has covered a song at least once. What covers have wowed you? They can be from big name bands or they can be from some random unknown you found while browsing youtube. Post all the good covers of songs you find here and share them with us.

    Here's my contributions for examples.

    First, an unknown.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DdCZwLRUAgU

This guy flawlessly plays Karma by Bump of Chicken. It's honestly one of the best covers I've ever seen.

    Now, a big name band.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TMPy4MMAXcE

This was a bonus track on The Offspring's Greatest Hits album. They cover Next to You by The Police. I honestly don't know if I prefer this or the original.

And finally NO FLAMING. If someone posts a band you don't like then skip their post and move on. Feel free to comment about what you like about the covers though. Just make sure you quote so we know which one you're talking about.

Props to Ravona for the awesome sig! Noel is the greatest and I challenge you to prove me otherwise!

arisato-kun@ well ofcourse the original of Next To You is a whole lot better, its friggin The Police man..when i saw them..50,000 ppl..O.O..

hmm..cover songs..ive never been much of a fan of cover songs, cause well. i prefer to see what a band can do as them, rather than to hear what song made by famous musicians they can play..so yeah..some that i thought were good were..

    Trivium - Iron Maiden
i really enjoy this song cause they didnt do what other bands have done when making a cover, they give it their own feel to it, as in, if you didnt know this song was originally by Iron Maiden, you could be like, wow this is an awesome trivium song. matt heafy's voice fits good in this song along with his guitar playing and corey beaulieu's soloing and shredding skills, followed by the drumming of travis smith..awesome, and we cant forget Paolo Gregoletto, awesome awesome bass player, if u didnt know, ud think the person bass playing on this song would be Steve Harris from Iron Maiden

    Disturbed - Land of Confusion
at 1st, i never gave this song a chance cause i knew it was originally by Genesis, but then one day, like 3 yrs later i decided to listen to it..AMAZING! friggin 10/10. its a very good cover song by a very good band. i really like genesis' version, cause well you know its original, but disturbed gave it something it was missing, good friggin bass riffs..man, u can hear it clearly, its just awesome

Black Label Society - No More Tears
WOW! this song bleeds BLS up the ass man..its pure bls, only a true BLS and Ozzy Osbourne fan would know this is a cover. Zakk Wylde gives it an amazing groove to it, heavy as hell, mean, distorted to hell and just straigt up a moshin song. I mean i love Ozzy Osbourne's version, cause its the song that got me into rock and heavy metal, but this one is just amazing. badass and it wont disappoint you, always something Zakk Wylde delivers, heavy amazing and kickass Heavy Metal.

    last but not least..
    Slayer - I Hate You
honestly..the real song sucks so badly..i mean, its horrible, and no im not saying this cause im a Slayer fan, im saying it cause it really sucks. Slayer put their geniusness and their pure fuckin talent into this song. of course they couldnt make it into a pure Slayer song because it had to stay in that old school punk feel...but none the less, amazing.

i like covers to a point. i don't like it if bands put the covers n their actual cds but if they put it onto a compilation cd just made for covers, like the punk goes... series, then i'm all for it.

here are some good ones. in no particular order

1.I'm Real: orig. j.Lo, covered by the Starting Line (from punk goes pop)
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MKXM_xZIIdw

    2. Umbrella: orig, Rihanna, covered by All Time Low (from punk goes crunk)
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_Eis3S3f1P8

    3. Still Fly: orig, the Big Tymers (sp?) covered by The Devil Wears Prada ( from punk goes crunk)
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_Eis3S3f1P8

    4. Icebox: orig, Omarion covered by There for Tomorrow (from punk goes pop vol 2)
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hXR6g9XrRRw

    5. I Kissed A Girl: orig, Katy Perry covered by Attack Attack! (punk goes pop vol 2)
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QJOH0zf9Fq0

    thats all for now.

if you wanna see a really horrible cover, click on the following link

the sharpest lives: orig My Chemical Romance covered by some douchey kid that graduated a year after i did. he thinks he's awesome.

    Sikth - Tupelo
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fojw5Z3JwSU

Great cover of Nick Cave's classic, very accurate.

    Faith No More - Easy
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9AuhTr2AAQQ

    Classic cover of Lionel Ritchie.

Between the Buried and Me - Bicycle Race.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C4gOqhkkIZM

Another jokes cover, very accurate again, and relatively out of character of the band, queen this time.

    Periphery - Black or White.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B8k3o_YB80Q

Michael Jackson tribute, another accurate cover.. not really listing particularly abstract covers here am I.

Dillinger Escape Plan - Come to Daddy.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q8Rg9xH0Ntg

Aphex twin cover, pretty different to the original, while exactly the same.. Awesome imo.

    Killswitch Engage - Holy Diver.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rZ7wMHzS4mY

Yes its obvious, but someone was going to say it. Probably one of the most popular covers of the last 10 years, but it is great.

Anthrax/Public Enemy - Bring the Noize.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RBA-xi8WuCU

Not so much a cover as a collaboration, but yeah, another brilliant version of the song. One of my very fave songs.

    TC - Where's my Money (Caspa's remix)
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ciOmlFLZNx0

Again, not quite a cover, this time it's a remix, but its about as close as dnb gets to covers, so here you go. Brilliant rendition, completely changed the mood of the tune, total conversion from a very aggy dnb track to a classic dubstep track.

La Roux - In for the Kill (Skream Let's Get Ravey remix)
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CFW4LqsTPO0

Another example of a "cover", but this is probably the best of the lot in terms of dubstep remixes. Way overplayed nowadays, but that doesn't discredit it, it is brilliantly done. The original song is pretty crap, but the remixed one is absolutely brilliant.

Chase & Status - Duppy Man.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-M8zpBsMoM0

Chase & Status' dnb rework of Capleton's classic "Slew Dem". my personal fave of their stuff, really good aggy dnb. Great drops, allways love it when this comes on in clubs.

Dan le Sac vs Scroobius Pip - Fixed.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZikWfrGG9kU

Another example of something which can only be described as a "sorta cover". They've taken the beat to "Fix up look Sharp" by Dizzee, and changed the song structure, lyrics. Still counts as almost a cover imo.

    Johnny Cash - Hurt.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o22eIJDtKho

Powerful cover of the NIN song, both are great, but this one has the added power cos of who it is that's singing it, and what they're trying to portray.

    Mnemic - Wild Boys.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0pDc0rVbmnY

Mnemic covering Duran Duran. Nuff said.

The video's meant to be a parody of the original, which is kinda the point.

The song's always been a total joke, dio's lyrics make no sense, and its just stupidly epic, but that's always been what the song's like, it was never meant to be taken seriously afaik, KSE just did a modern take of it, which is fair enough.

That being said, its popularity has definitely overshadowed what already was a massively famous/popular/etc song.

not really. its just that you aren't open minded to understand what Dio is talking about in his lyrics, to many people its like.."what the fuck is he saying"..but to someone who does know what hes saying, dio is a genius.

even if it was a parody, still..its not metal, as for dio's original video, it may seem like a joke to the people of today, but we all have to understand that its dio.

and thats true, which is extremely sad, cause kse being metalcore..well, thats all i gotta say.

another good cover song i forgot to mention

    Ozzy Osbourne - Purple Haze

ozzy's vocals fits perfect for this song, its genius
zakk rips this song up..its just, damn..he plays hendrix good with his style.
imo, its one of the best cover songs

rofl, you pretentious twat, its nothing about being open minded - the song's completely meaningless.

"ride the tiger, you can see his stripes but you know he's clean" - Oh wicked, that makes perfect sense, right?

The song's always been a total joke, however awesome it is, its fucking retarded.

sigh..and ur a mod? seriously, pick some better ppl, not ppl that think they know what they are saying like this smelly pussy above me, if she gets to call me twat, then i guess i can say something back, btw, you should take up on learning some metaphors

anywho,i love your ignorance, miss close fucking minded, if you claim you have all these instruments and blatantly say you can play and such, then ur a disgrace to all the good bands you listen to..the song holy diver, ill explain the line u posted

"ride the tiger, you can see his stripes but you know he's clean, oh dont you see what i mean"

    means

Ronnie is singing about doing heroine and him doing heroine, hence being kind of an addict to it. Tiger is slang for heroin, which makes those black cc measurement lines on the syringe its "stripes", and as a bonus, the heroin is clean.

it talks about drugs and to not get into religion, "jump to religion" hence to "holy dive" a person....HOLY DIVER

edit: i feel like i should add more to this, i feel like close minded ignorant idiots wont get it soo..

ronnie james dio used to do heroine, the lines also mean the track marks, it being clean would be like white china, pure pure heroine. Ronnie James Dio is a genius when it comes to religion, examples would be the black bible(satanism) and the holy bible. he knows way too much. him knowingly that getting really into it would be like, driving yourself crazy, not knowing whats true and whats not true, i know it would make me crazy. therefore, hes kind of giving a warning to not do it, to not "holy dive" cause he is a "holy diver".."Between the velvet lies, a truth thats hard as steel" meaning in the velvet, a very pleasant, luxurious, desirable situation...there lies the truth thats hard as steel, meaning its the truth of truths, so to be a holy diver is to try to look for the answer that is "hard as steel"
theres another line that is similar to the tiger one..but it says

    Jump on the tiger
You can feel his heart but you know he's mean

talking about heroine again, only this time hes saying, if you "jump on the tiger" do heroine, youll feel it to heart, cause heroine makes ur heart pump faster, so u can "feel his heart"
"but you know he's mean" meaning well, this one is simple, heroine is mean, itll take your life whether its your 1st hit ever, the 2nd, 50th, 100th, it doesnt matter, itll kill you.

    so to sum it up....

It is clearly about Heroine addiction. Holy diver could be referring to the fact that he "religiously" dives into his high. "Down to long..." means he has been doing it to long and he realizes this (whats becoming of me...Gotta get away). Riding the "tiger" is bein high on heroine and the stripes are the lines on a syringe. Shiny diamonds may mean the rocks but I'm not sure. Getting away could also refer to escaping one's feelings by getting high through the truth thats hard as steel, aka a needle. The tiger is called mean and this is because obviously heroine is bad, and of course life is a never ending wheel because the cycle of addiction keeps going, like a wheel and because a wheel is round meaning that you always end up back where you started.

and not just being a song of personal experience
    also
"It's simply a song about things that are not always what they appear to be. You need to look at more than what the package is, you need to look inside. The cover of the album hightlights that - Dio has said many times, why is a devil drowning a priest? well, maybe it's a priest drowning a devil! Bad people don't always look bad, many times they look normal. Also, good people may not always be the ones who are prettiest on the outside."

    and thats basically it

edit: im sorry about the rule breaking arisato-kun, but no.1 i cant let someone get away after saying something bad about a band or song i love, and no.2, she started it

Love how heated up you're getting - Its called the internet. Grow up. People disagree.

Oh and btw - Dio's a big boy (not physically), he doesn't need some kid on the internet defending him, especially not someone who is happy to state random interpretations as fact. These random song meanings you find on the internet are almost always total garbage, based not on anything said or described by the arist, but just the ravings of some pretentious weirdos, looking for more in a song then there normally is.

Oh and btw, that is me assuming that you googled to find that song meaning, which I'm sure you did, though I'm sure you'll come back and tell me how you came up with it all yourself.
