Boot into safe mode and see if it still does it. . .

Yeah. Get a decent anti-virus and update it also while you're at it. Either it's a virus, or one of your hardware's bust.

    Just reformat the whole thing.

Then think of it as a new PC wherein trolls stole your current PC last night.

If you have a backup, use system recovery.

    Exactly

Right now your best bet is to boot your computer in Safe Mode With Networking (which, if you don't know, starts your system up with the minimal amount of processes needed i.e. graphics, system files, etc.) Let your comp sit in this mode for a while. If nothing happens, and you are able to establish an internet connection [that stays on], then it is most likely a malicious program.

Try running several anti-virus programs while in Safe Mode (I recommend Spybot Search and Destroy, and Ad Aware, both available for free)

You may also want to download a program called HijackThis, also free.

    Good luck

All the suggestions above, Safe Mode, anti-virus, system recovery, are good ideas. If you have a virus you may have to re-format and re-install you OS.

When you get over these issues you really should get an anti-virus. I use PC-Tools myself. Also, consider No-Script for added surfing protection. Good luck
