    The God Debate

I've been going over this thought constantly for the past month...

HOW can God claim to be Omnipotent AND Benevolent at the same time? I mean, if he's so all-powerful and well-meaning, why is there hunger, war, disease, crime, and corruption in the world? I asked my mother this, and she went into some ranbling rant about how God is all-powerful and well-meaning simplybecause that's how he is, and I as a human am not meant to understand it yet.

    Ready, Set, Discuss!
(Note, this is in reference to the God in Christianity)

There are really a few different explanations for that depending on which religion you're talking to.

There's the "God is testing them." explanation. There's the "God is punishing them." explanation. There's the "God is letting us handle our own destiny." explanation, and so much more.

Actually, that's really a huge part of it. God is supposedly something that surpasses human understanding. Or else he wouldn't be God.

Simple, God's good, people aren't. We have a little thing called free will. That allows bad people to do bad things as well as allow good people to do good things. That takes care of your war, crime and corruption. As for hunger and disease that was non-existent when we had paradise. Humanity had to go and disobey one simple command and that's what screwed us all over. I would have honestly thought not eating apples would be a small price to pay for that whole eternal bliss thing. Meh, what're ya gonna do?

Props to Ravona for the awesome sig! Noel is the greatest and I challenge you to prove me otherwise!

Your point brings about another topic, Arisato-kun.

Is it just me, or does the whole concept of God giving us free will yet banishing us to a lake of fire for eternity if we do wrong seem a little hypocritical?

On one hand, He gave us free will, and therefore acknowledged that we might not use it the way He planned. On the other, he pretty much said "If you don't do this this way and do that that way, you're going to Hell".

i thought the false prophet and satan were the only two going to the lake of fire

in fact according to the revelations, heaven, hell, and everything in between will fade away and there will be a new jerusalem while somewhere else i dont know which book but its says something different.

A common mistake that people make when trying to design something completely foolproof is to underestimate the ingenuity of complete fools.

I find it really easy to blame all of the world's problems on God (or a God for other faiths/religions). So because I feel that's a copout, I try not to use him as an excuse for every unfortunate thing that should happen in my life or in the world. God gave me Free Will so the least I could do is try to deal with problems in my own way before falling back on God as crutch. In my opinion, if we were to turn to God at every bad turn, we'd be a helpless society.

    damn this thread is pointless
you don't know jack shit about god
the bible as you know it was written by humans, so what the powers of god are stricly philosophicly given to him by us...
in the bible it is said that he created us on his image...well to what lenght, just the appearence or simply the whole package...
you can say that the universe is god's playing ground and he enjoys screwing up our lifes but thats not true,

In general(im catholic btw) humans need to know that they are immortal in one way or another so that is the basic reason gods exist in the past, but in modern times we turn to god for our piece of mind....you may find this strange but every war, every hungering and every suffering is an answer to someone else's prayer....in the independence war of my country we prayed for the death of the enemy....
