To me this is the most laughable false reason to not have Nuclear power. I note that the rogue nations we want to keep from having nuclear power have developed it anyway, so why are we using this fake reason to not provide energy we need.
Actually no, the only three nations that are non-signatories are India, Pakistan and Israel, all of whom who have admittedly developed their own weapons yes, but of course, all of whom have relatively large resources. However, other supposedly dangerous cases, such as North Korea and Iran, got the start on their presumed weapons development programs through nuclear power research, which they were given the tacit approval to start the instant they signed up to the treaty.

I'm not saying it's a bullet-proof argument, nor even a good one, and neither am I sure that it's any nations right to identify "undesirables" and then deny them an important source of power for their people purely on the prediction that they may develop weaponry with it, but it will remain a concern for some.

Actually, thinking about it, the real counter to this argument is that it's too late, pretty much everyone has access to nuclear power now, so we might as well make the best of it.

    My one concern;

    Chernobyl

If you've never heard of it, I suggest you use google.

I was 10 at the time. Thinking about it still scares me sh*tless.

    Spoiler!

Anyone play Fallout? Of course you have. In essence, that would be the future if we rely to much on Nuclear power(Even lawnmowers were nuclear powered). Still Nuclear Power is very powerful and definitely should be used more. The only things that give out more energy have been lost. Cold Fusion and Tesla's power where far superior.

I bet the soil over there is radterrific.

Fallout series is an excellent reason why this world should depend on radiation.

    Chernobyl......Okay, I'll bite.

    Point (1)

    a) Ancient Soviet technology

    b) Poorly trained workers

Even in that era, there were already more advanced Soviet style tech. available.

For more info please see: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chernobyl_disaster

    Point (2)

Imagine us banning manned space travel because of the horrible Mercury and early Apollo fatalities

Above are the picture of Apollo 1 astronauts who were burnt to death on the launch pad. Countries like Britain had a (wrong) policy of no human or manned space flight.

Notice that that was Apollo 1 the very first Apollo mission. If we had given up then, Apollo 11 (that landed on the moon) would never have happened.

Just as Apollo 1 did not end manned space travel, and the Titanic did not end sea faring,

Just as the crash of the comet :
    http://news.bbc.co.uk/onthisday/hi/d...00/2709957.stm

did not end Jet Travel. Chernobyl too should not end Nuclear energy, Instead it should spur research into more excellent technology.

Even so technology exist today where we have nuclear plants that shut down in a controlled, safe way if loss of coolant should occur.

There is one more largely unknown type of nuclear power. This is from using the element Thorium instead of Uranium. The thing about Thorium is that it cannot be made to explode nomatter how you try. IE, No BOMBS.

The world will progress very slowly because of the way we live now.
    We still function as tonws,countries,continens,rases,religion........
Until we abolish all of this and start living and thinking as ONE ,only then we will be able to make progress, our world is still very young and still very cruel but when i when a kid in africa meets a kid in asia, the first thing you see on their faces is a smile, compared to when a kid from america meets a kid from europe because then u only see fear and loathing....

As for nuclear power towards noncombat advancement, i am for it 100%.
However, i dont think the human mind, at any stage, is mature enough to properly handle nuclear warfare capabilities.
