Kekkei Genkai translates to blood inheritance limit, but is better described as a genetic trait. An even better description would be a small segmentof the genetic code that creates a unique chakra and sometimes a bodily effect.

Chakra is created in the organs, and is fed throughout the body through a chakra network. A persons genes dictate how these organs develope and function. A chakra based kekkei genkai (like mokuton and hyouton) is created when a persons organ produce two chakras in near perfect equality. This is why these kekkei genkai are so rare, because people rarely have a natural affinity to more than one chakra, as their genes tell their organs to produce more of one chakra than the rest. This is why Naruto has a wind natured affinity, and the Uchiha have a natural fire affinity. Nagato, with his Rin'negan eyes, has a perfect balance of all chakra types, including yin and yank. Mixing the two chakra's may require a catalyst as seems to be in Haku's case. Yamato said that he needed use water in one hand, and earth in the other. But Haku was able to use one handed hand signs (Which would probably be hard enough with one chakra type) to create hyouton, which means that he mixed wind and water chakra BEFORE he molded it. This pre-mixing may have been aided by a hormone or catalyst.

The Shodaime Hokage's Mokuton may not have been passed down do to an inability to reproduce (that would suck), or by his choice not to have children. Tsunade is his great grandniece, which means she isn't a direct decendant.

Kekkei genkai that are visibly present (doujutsus, and Kimimaro's ability) are created by a gene that creates tissue variations.

The Sharingan is only visible when the user focuses chakra into his eyes, causing the eye (Iris? I don't know my eye anatomy very well) to change color and functionality, by heightening the strength of the cones and rods in the eyes. The ability to percieve chakra flow may be aided by an extra unnamed receptor unique to the sharingan eye. Kakashi's eye is permanently in sharingan form, which means that his eye is always using chakra, but because he doesn't have a proper balance of chakra type (his genes don't produce the right amount of whatever chakra type needed. Likely fire) needed for the eye to function efficiently, he ends up using more chakra than an Uchiha would. The sharingan also changes the number of tomoe, depending on how much of each chakra type is being used, or even how much of it is used. An extreme emotional response, may cause hormones to produce large amounts of the needed chakra, causing the persons eye to either take on the form of sharingan (any number of tomoe in either eye. The body may not symetrically use the chakra resulting in eyes with different numbers of tomoe), increase the number of tomoe, or even take on the mangekyou form. Exceessive use of the mangekyou sharingan, by the original owner of the eye, may wear out the cones, rods, and chakra receptors, causing blindness. When an eye transplant occurs, the eyes are straining to obtain the desired amount of chakra, instead of over using it, creating an "eternal" MS. This may mean that Kakashi may only be weakened by the lack of chakra, instead of going blind like Sasuke and Itachi. Kakashi may have awakened his MS by using a hand sign that focuses the right balance of chakra into his eye.

Kimimaro's ability occurs when his body rapidly uses a large amount of chakra that results in increased bone developement. The cursed seal causes his body to produce even more chakra, resulting in his tail thing, and the spikes on his back during the second stage.

The Byakugan eye is in constant effect. The chakra receptors in the eyes are located all around the inside of the eye, except for the eyris, creating the blind spot, and the ability to see in near 360 degrees. This would be limited to seeing chakra only, where the user only sees the visible spectrum through frontal vision. When the byakugan is used in extreme, the users veins bulge around the eyes, causing large amounts of chakra to flow all around the eyes, and enhancing the users perception of chakra allowing the user to see the chakra points in the body.

The Rin'negan eye is unique, even to the world of kekkei genkais. It allows the user to create a perfect balance of all chakra types, and to likely percieve them too. The user probably sees the different chakras in different colors. But more importantly is the production of all chakra types in balance. Each chakra probably resonates at a certain frequency.

Peins bodies are covered with chakra sensitive piercings. But these piercings are in specific locations on both Nagato's body and the Pain bodies. This may be because Nagato is sending and recieving chakra signals from certain body parts, allowing him to see through ALL of his bodies, as well as make them move. This is why all of his bodies are dead, so the bodies don't interfere with the chakra signals. This is also the likely reason why only the god realm talks; a tongue piercing. You may now be wondering how Nagato controls each body seperately, and only up to six bodies at a time. Well the answer is chakra frequency. Each body is sensitive to only one chakra type, meaning the signals sent by Nagato are each in different frequencies, with each frequency (one for each chakra type, inclunding yin/yang), are only effective in the bodies most sensitive to them. If Nagato used two bodies with the same chakra affinity were used by Pain, both bodies would move and react the same, plus the sensory signals would merge creating inaccurate sensations. Nagato is able to see with all six bodies because each body sends back visual signals of different frequencies. His body would then percieve different sights by focusing on one frequency. This would require a lot of brain power at first, but given time and practice, Nagato was able to get the hang of using multiple bodies at once. In theory, Nagato would likely be capable of using Hyouton, Mokuton, and lava (youton?) techniques, but not through the 6 paths.

In theory, anyone can use a kekkei genkai, the only thing stopping them is their chakra affinity. It would take a large period of time and luck to use any kekkei genkai by a person who doesn't posses the genes that assist in creation and use of kekkei genkais and the chakra's needed for them.

Kakashi doesn't have the elemental affinity for it. He has a lighting affinity, which is why he created chidori when he was unable to create an elemental rasengan. I also said that elemental fusion was created when two chakras of the exact same amount of chakra are mixed. The four tailed jinchuuriki was able to create lava techniques with the assistance of his bijuu, it wasn't a kekkei genkai. Plus, it would take nearly a lifetime to get the balance of two different chakras, and then you would need to mix the chakras properly. Like I also said, a hormone or catalyst created by someone with the kekkei genkai gene, may be required to mix the chakras.

as to the part where nagato is focusing his chakra into the paths through the piercings is something I had suggested months ago..but that in and of itself doesnt really say a lot in particular, as each of the paths abilities (other than the summoner.. and even then summoning isnt a specific affinity) dosen't appear to have a specific elemental affinity.. Nagato himself may be the exception to that rule.. but in that contraption hes in atm, we might never know..

the 4 tailed beast's hosts ability was probably more due to the bijuu's power than the hosts.. and to kind of go on a tangent with this, lets assume for the moment that the Kyuubi's primary affinty is with fire.. and we find out later than Naruto's second affinty is with water.. what type jutsu would they be using then, steam?

then, as far as we know where the other 2 dojutsu KG's are concerned (where the primary user of the rin'negan does appear to be able to use all the elemental types with ease.. the paths are limited to whatever ability thier body piercings allow), neither the sharingan nor byakugan appear tied to a specific elemental affinity.. which is mainly where your theory gets blown out of the water.

to put it this way.. if any of the paths abilities used hand seals and were not tied to the Rin'negan's KG ability(yes, this is a bit of a stretch.. but with the sharingan's abilites pretty much fully defined.. in theory this should be true).. madara, sasuke and kakashi (with fully developed sharingans) would be able to copy and use them as thier own.. and to poke holes in my own theory before someone else does.. the only hand seals we've seen any of the paths make so far is god realm making the seal for chibaku tensei, and the summoning paths seals to summon the variety of critters at his/her disposal and the other paths/konan.. but as we all pretty much know.. the summoning path is the exception to the rule on summons (where the person doing the summoning needs to have signed the particular beasts summoning contract with thier own blood, or by proxy using the blood of the signer of the contract)..

and to put one more hole in the theory in general.. as the granddaughter of the first hokage, shouldn't (at least in theory) Tsunade also be capable of using Mokuton?

*sigh* I'm saying how chakra types balance out and create kekkei genkai. Each person has their own unique chakra balance, because each person has unique DNA. Chakra balances that are similar are usually genetic, resulting in bodies that adapt to effectively use their chakra. This eventually resulted in the birth of kekkei genkai. A persons body tissue reacts to the chakra it's exposed to. If the tissue is from the persons body, it doesn't waste chakra trying to obtain the amount of one type needed. Here's some math.

You're Naruto and Haku. Now let's say Naruto has 72 parts wind, 17 parts water, and 11 parts other, and Haku has 47 parts wind, 52 parts water, and 1 part other. In order to use ice jutsu A, they need to use 47 parts wind, and 52 parts water, EXACTLY, otherwise you don't create the ice. Haku would just have to focus a one whole unit of chakra (100 mixed parts, that can't be split) to use the technique efficiently, without using more chakra than needed for the technique. Naruto would have to use quite a few units of chakra before he reached the proper proportions of water and wind. He may not even have enough chakra to reach that balance. On top of that, the actual chakra balances would be something more like 47.95470 wind, 51.3857275209587 water, and 1> other. Getting the right proportion of chakras, would be nigh impossible (statiscally you'd have better chances of winning the lottery, getting struck by lighting TWICE, attacked by a shark, AND dying in a nuclear a nuclear explosion within 24 hours), unless you posessed unlimited chakra, in which case trying to use a kekkei genkai would be pointless when you could destroy a whole village. Plus, you need to know the hand signs needed to perform a desired jutsu. You wanna take those odds? Oro might be the only person who would because he would have the time to absorb the right number of bodies with the right amounts of chakra, or he could inject himself with DNA of a person with the kekkei genkai.

Kakashi's sharingan is unique. The sharingan can only be used by a person who's DNA built their body with the right tissues for the sharingan eye. or you can transplant the eye. But the eye maintains sharingan form if removed, because the hormones that turn the sharingan off aren't present, so the eye constantly uses the chakra needed to perform. Let's say the sharingan needs 54 parts fire chakra exactly to be used effectively. But Kakashi's chakra is 68 parts lightning, 15 parts earth, 9 parts fire, 7 parts water, and 1 part wind. In order for him to use the sharingan effectively, he would need to use 6 units of chakra for the eye to work, and this is over a period of time, draining his chakra all the time. When an eye sees an unchanging environment, the brain turns off all signals from that eye and likely the chakra flow too. This is why he covers his eye when he doesn't use it. MS patterns are unique to the user because the eye reacts differently to different chakra balances. MS is activated by filtering the chakra into different parts of the eye. When the eye is transplanted, the filter is still there, but because there is a different chakra balance, the eye doesn't fully take on the original pattern.

your trying to make it far to complicated, and in all the wrong areas.

your trying to say that affinity to a specific chakra type defines KG's. but affinity's are only a small part of what determines a persons abilities, let alone the ability of an entire bloodline.

i think it plays a siginificant role, but the way you go about trying to put an exact science to it is wrong....

i'll have to go back over both the manga and anime to comfirm this when i have the chance.. but im pretty sure Kakashi said that the sharingan couldn't copy ANY jutsu where a KG was involved in its creation (like haku's ice mirrors)..

but lets play along with your theory shall we and use Naruto.. only your chakra mix proportion is totally off for Mr. Uzumaki..

thanks to the kyuubi's ever present mixing of its chakra into naruto's chakra pool (eventually becoming part of naruto's base chakra reserve), naruto has quite possibly an order of magnitude greater chakra than just about everyone in the manga (outside of the other bijuu hosts, Nagato, Kisame and perhaps Madara). AND that's before even adding the fox and sage mode into the mix.

so for this example, where you say haku has 47 parts wind, 52 parts water and 1 other.. we'll assume naruto has (just for the sake of argument here) 5 times each what you pose for him (and again, we're assuming water is going to be naruto's second affinity).. again, contributing to his incredibly larger chakra pool. Assuming he knows the seals required and has the proper chakra control (and for this example, we'll use non sage mode naruto as of the last few chapters of the manga.. the fact that he has mastered sage mode in my eyes tells me he would have the required control), by your theory he 'should' be able to perform Haku's KG jutsus.

and also, dont forget that the only element we've seen Kakashi NOT use is wind (to my knowledge at least).. so with that in mind and given his chakra pool and control, only the dojutsu specific KG jutsu would be out of his capabilities assuming he knew the proper seals
