You could use VLC as someone said before, also if you Google Codec Pack, there are free codecs that will let almost anything play your MKVs (and many other media).

I currently use this : http://www.free-codecs.com/download/...codec_pack.htm

K-Lite Mega Codec Pack or CCCP (combined comunity codec pack) + any player
