Or he could clean up the image first, erase the shades, create new lines (lineart) and then start colouring. Then use the original image as a reference so he doesn't forget what areas that were shaded.

I think I'll go with gin's suggestion because the manga I want to do colors with is a very very dark themed manga. I want to preserve the foreboding/evil feeling of the page.
Linearts are the way to go, erasing gray is probably the gayest thing to do.
I'll try doing a tutorial on my next coloring if it's not a long one.
