Obviously both the Fire and Lava are only in contact with each other, and nothing else can be burnt. Because the Lava uses the Fire's oxygen, the Fire is extinguished.

I think OP needs a good sacrificial character to move the story along and Ace is the best one for it. Also no main characters died in OP (besides the boat) but for the most part stooges have died.

This move in The story will probably push Luffy.. it's for The better of things.
