the difference is shinigami as a collective not all got to see the violence because most of the action was done in hueco mundo and karkura town ... aizen had a greater plan and didn't want to bother himself killing small fry. whilst the VR's are looking for revenge for what happened to quinces so they are exterminating hence the fear and confusion.

AIzen wasn't interested in destroying SS, at least not right off. Aizen wanted to become the Soul King, and to become the Supreme being. He couldn't be bothered to actually kill any, but for a few Shinigami, until he'd become the Soul King.

Not quite, Aizen wanted to 'sit', or you could even say 'ride' on the Soul King, since Aizen called "IT" an empty throne and not a living, thinking being, in his image it's only a thing. Urahara on the other hand, described it as a linchpin, that supports the balance of the world and if it were to disappear, the world would crumble.

What's really interesting, is that SS and the HR balance only each other out, which might mean that other worlds are too small to have any real impact on the balance, or that for each world, there is another one that balances it out. For example, it's possible that for HM, the world on the other side of the scale, is the KR.
