They never showed him. Im actually thinking that shanks convinced kaidou to help him out since we can't just not see such an important character. we've already lost one yonkou, we can't lose two in the same day.
I agree that shanks wont actually fight. he's here to stop the war, not to continue it. I think we'll just see a glimpse of his epicness. There can't really be a retreat though, like all the pirates, the marines have nowhere to run and BB won't let them. hmm... i don't know if he'll fight or not. if BB's there it seems like we'll see shanks fight. Or maybe just his presence will scare the BB pirates away, and maybe if kaidou is there he'll actually realize he'll get killed. I don't think any of us will be able to tell what's going to happen. I just know dragon won't show up
