This filler keeps getting more interesting.

The Eight headed thingy that emerged from the Tower at the end of the show, I am thinking..."Yamada no Orochi"

Yeah its original at least. I'm guessing the machine is some kind of weather controller.

To be honest, i don't like any filler... it drags the story so much that it's almost annoying.
The 3 tails and the Utakata (6 tails) arcs were so long and boring, just to show Akatsuki collecting the bijuu's.

Good reference Paul, the first thing that came to my mind when you refereed Yamata no Orochi, was the Shaman King manga :)

In a little side note, while i never searched the web for this subject, i found some references to the names of some doujutsu.
In Japonese mythology, Yamata no Orochi was slain by storm-god Susanoo :P :P who was expelled from Heaven for tricking his sister, the sun-goddess, Amaterasu :P

So in a little joke, the left and right eyes are truly and meaningfully related and connected to each other by the heavens :) :P
