galacticninja on April 14th, 2011 at 12:11:12 PM UTC Uploaders: I'd like to request that you put the format (JPG / PNG) of the files you are uploading.

Are there high quality lossless PNG image format uploads? Preferably low filesized (3-4 MB) and uploaded to Mediafire.

Note to all PNG uploaders: the Binktopia/Mangashare Naruto scanlation is only 8 BPP (256 colors), including the Mangastream/Binktopia credits page. The black and white parts (which is most of the scanlation) are all grayscale.

Set your PNG image editors to save the images as 8 BPP (256 colors) and grayscale, with maximum compression, except for the few parts with color like the Mangastream/Binktopia credits page, which should be saved as 256-color too, but not grayscale. If there are fan art pages, they should be saved as JPG as these types of images do not compress well with PNG.

Doing these will maintain the quality of the scanlation images (which are originally lossless PNG images), save a lot of disk space, and consequently, offer a faster download speed.

Rokudaime Sennin â„¢ on April 14th, 2011 at 12:42:02 PM UTC @GalacticNinja:  quick note, all of my mirrors are png files (except for the color jpegs) mediafire links are a bitch to maintain, i hate the popups, they delete the files very fast, so I leave that to others to mirror if they want.

you're asking for high quality lossless pngs, yet still maintain a size of 3-4 mb, not possible unless it's optimized.  My files are the original png files that mangastream uses to upload to their reader.  Same original size, same quality, not gonna get any better than the original mangastream files.

The greyscale/256 color is irrelevant as they're unedited, untouched original mangastream files, uncompressed except for zipping up using winrar.

And I don't see the difference between 4 mb or 7 mb, get a bigger hd, and slightly faster internet if your worried about that.  Like I said, all my files are the original files that MangaStream uses to upload to their reader, I don't mess around with em.

Why're u so specific, do you upload to any other readers?

@Rokudaime Sennin

"GalacticNinja: quick note, all of my mirrors are png files (except for the color jpegs) mediafire links are a bitch to maintain, i hate the popups, they delete the files very fast, so I leave that to others to mirror if they want."

I see. I didn't know that as they are not marked as PNG (and a lot of the other uploaders upload JPG files - I think most of them). Thanks for that.  If you use an ad blocker with your browser with an extension like Firefox' Skipscreen, the popups are not a problem. Mediafire does not also force you to wait for a long time before allowing a download. However, you may be right about them deleting the files so fast, although I haven't experienced that myself.

What I like about Mediafire, though, is that it doesn't care if a single IP address downloads more than 1 file at once, there are no long waits before a download starts, no per-country download slot limits and it supports download resuming.

Other one-click hosting sites do not allow downloads from multiple IP addresses. This is compounded by the fact that my ISP implements Network address translation (NAT) to share a single IP address to multiple subscribers.

"You're asking for high quality lossless pngs, yet still maintain a size of 3-4 mb, not possible unless it's optimized. My files are the original png files that mangastream uses to upload to their reader. Same original size, same quality, not gonna get any better than the original mangastream files."

I said preferably 3-4 MB, not required. Optimizing PNG files won't affect their quality as PNG is a lossless image format. Think .ZIP or .7z, but for images. So, I recommend you do this, if possible.

Note: You can use OptiPNG to optimize your PNG files.

"The greyscale/256 color is irrelevant as they're unedited, untouched original mangastream files, uncompressed except for zipping up using winrar."

There are a lot of people that upload PNGs in full 16-million+ colors (24 BPP), including your copy (I just checked it), bloating up the file-sizes of the 256-color original Mangastream PNG files. (If you want to check that the original is indeed 256-color, go directly to the Mangastream Naruto page and try downloading or checking the images thru your browser: (Link).  Also, PNG files, by definition, are compressed image formats.

Further compressing or optimizing PNG files, if done properly, should have no effect on its quality (as it is a lossless format).

"And I don't see the difference between 4 mb or 7 mb, get a bigger hd, and slightly faster internet if your worried about that. Like I said, all my files are the original files that MangaStream uses to upload to their reader, I don't mess around with em."

4 MB or 7 MB makes a lot of difference if your manga collection numbers to the hundreds. Faster internet and bigger HDs don't grow in trees, so I prefer lower file sized PNGs, whenever possible. Like I said, it is preferable, and not required. It will help the uploader and the hundreds (or thousands) of downloaders if you offer lower file-sized PNGs.

"Why're u so specific, do you upload to any other readers?"

I am specific so my request is understood correctly. I only upload and then post the links in Mangashare comments when I have the time to (not very often). And if I do, the PNGs are optimized to ~3-5 MB offering faster downloads, and saving hard disk space without sacrificing image quality.
