@nsd: The answer is simple really. There are three factors that decide the filesize. First being the dimensions of the picture. Second, is how clean it is. There are two parts to that. First the image itself. Meaing an all white page (even if the dimensions were 20000x20000) would have a real small filesize, because it's easy to write that in code. If a picture is difficult to write in code because it's complex, it takes more space. Like many speedlines close together and stuff like that. So not as many white or black areas. The other part of it is the black and white areas. The can look all black or white to your eye, but don't have to be. Even if it's not distinguishable by eye, if there is a color difference, it takes more space to write that in code.
Third and most likely the answer to your question is how you save the picture. Color pages are saved as jpg. Choose "save to web" (or something like that) in photoshop. With color picture you can't really dial down the filesize without losing quality. I save those on 80% quality and an check optimized. But you can also go to 65%. The color get's a little bit blocky when watched close up, but unless you really took your time cleaning it, 65% should do. If you took your time like me and don't want to lose too much quality choose 80 or higher.
As for black/white pages. Same as color ones. save to web. Choose png-8, adaptive, diffusion, 17 colors and 100% dither. That saves the pictures without you loosing picture quality. If you want to be on the safe side, you can up colors to 32 though.
I do DragonBall with those settings. And if you look at my work, you'll see I know what I'm talking about.

@seichirio, Thanks for the help mate, I'm trying to reduce the size of 1mb files so that all 29 files as a whole are below 5mb. What you recommended was very helpful managed to get them down as a whole to 8.5mb.
Cheers mate.

I'm curious. What release was it that you wanted to shrink down? Meaning can I download the 8,5mb file somewhere. I'd like to see what resolution it is, how complex the artwork is, and magic wand the black and whites to see how clean those are. Seeing if more space could be saved without quality loss.
